Story Line:
David Norris is an up and coming politician but on a night when he loses a Congressional election a chance meeting with a stranger, Elise Sellas, inspires him to make a brilliant concession speech that clearly makes him the front-runner for the next time around. They meet again by chance a few years later and are intent on seeing one another. What they do not realize is that there is a mysterious group of men calling themselves the Adjustment Bureau, who seem intent on keeping them apart. Soon David and Elise are on the run with the Bureau trying their best to separate them as they try to maintain David’s predetermined future.
Review:
“The Adjustment Bureau” falls into a new genre of science fiction romance that I am growing to like. In spite of their usual dumbing-down procedures, Hollywood has mastered the art of adding a great deal of thought to their films.
Based on one spontaneous kiss and a flirtatious encounter, David (Matt Damon) believes Elise (Emily Blunt) is the one for him. There are other plans in store for them. “They” is an ambiguous, indefinable pronoun. For the sake of keeping the intrigue alive, I’ll define “they” as the men of “The Adjustment Bureau”. It’s hard to tell what they want. However, David wants the girl–a beautiful girl, but still just a girl.
Our lives are filled with questions about free will, fate, soul mates, success, and predetermined destinies. New York architecture weaves an intricate maze around all of them. Even though intricate might not be the right word, the film sets everything out well in advance, and over and over again just in case you missed it. It’s at least intelligent, but it lacks subtlety.
“The Adjustment Bureau” has beautiful cityscapes and pretty people who play more profound characters than they normally do. There is something for everyone in this genre-mixing film. Though I could have used a bit more respect, I got the intelligence that is usually lacking from big-budget Hollywood action movies.
